Frame style

Most of Australia's relief hugs its edges, the Great Dividing Range running the length of the east coast, the Kimberley and Arnhem Land escarpments in the north, the ranges of the southwest. The interior is something else entirely: one of the oldest, flattest, most deeply eroded continental surfaces on the planet, ancient enough that its mountains have had hundreds of millions of years to wear almost completely down. Uluru is what's left when everything around it erodes faster than the rock itself.

At this scale the contrast reads clearly, a worn, textured interior ringed by sharper coastal relief, with Tasmania sitting separately to the south and the islands of Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian archipelago visible in black to the north, placing Australia correctly within its region.

Produced from digital elevation data, combining a 2D bathymetric poster with hand-assembled relief on a rigid 3mm board.
