British Isles

The British Isles pack a remarkable amount of geographic variety into a relatively small area. Scotland's Northwest Highlands and the fragmented coastline of the Western Isles dominate the north, some of the oldest exposed rock in Europe, heavily glaciated and still visibly raw. The Pennines run down the spine of northern England, Wales carries its own distinct upland mass, and Ireland sits separately to the west, its rugged Atlantic coast contrasting with the flatter central lowlands. Surrounding it all: the North Sea, the Irish Sea, the North Channel, and the English Channel — shallow, historically critical stretches of water that shaped everything from trade routes to invasions.

The piece covers the full archipelago, Great Britain, Ireland, Orkney, Shetland, the Hebrides, Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands, with a corner of the European continent visible at the southern edge, giving the islands their proper geographic context.
