Cyprus has a surprisingly varied topography for a Mediterranean island. The Troodos massif dominates the west, an exposed chunk of oceanic crust pushed above sea level by tectonic collision, peaking at Mount Olympus, while the long, narrow Kyrenia range runs along the northern coast like a spine. Between them lies the Mesaoria plain, a flat agricultural corridor that has been settled and fought over for millennia. The island sits at a geopolitical crossroads too: Turkey's southern coast is just 70 kilometres to the north, visible in the piece as a dark landmass at the upper edge of the frame.

The eastern Mediterranean drops steeply around the island on all sides, and that depth gradient is one of the more dramatic in the collection, the bathymetry shifts quickly from the shallow coastal shelf to deep open water, making Cyprus look precisely as isolated as it geopolitically is.

Produced from digital elevation data, combining a 2D bathymetric poster with hand-assembled relief on a rigid 3mm board.
