Gotland is Sweden's largest island and one of the Baltic's most distinctive, a flat limestone plateau that has barely changed in form since it emerged from a shallow tropical sea some 400 million years ago. There are no mountains here. The highest point barely clears 80 metres. What defines the island instead is its coastline: rauk rock formations rising from the water along the western shore, long sandy beaches to the east, and the medieval walls of Visby enclosing Sweden's best-preserved Hanseatic town.

That flatness is faithfully represented here. The 3D relief is intentionally low, because the geology is, but the bathymetric gradient tells a different story: the island sits on a shallow shelf that drops away into the deeper Baltic basin on all sides, and that contrast reads clearly in the finished piece.

Made from digital elevation data, with a 2D bathymetric poster and hand-mounted 3D terrain on a rigid 2mm art board.

For anyone with roots on the island, a summer there they want to remember, or a genuine interest in Baltic geography and history.
