Born from a hotspot sitting directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is one of the youngest landmasses on Earth and one of the few places where the ridge itself is visible above sea level. The island is literally being pulled apart along a northeast–southwest rift as the North American and Eurasian plates diverge. The result is a landscape in constant flux: active volcanoes beneath glaciers, lava fields still cooling, geothermal systems breaking the surface across the interior. Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier by volume, sits over some of the most volcanically active ground on the planet.

The piece captures that rawness well. The deeply indented fjord coastline, particularly the Westfjords in the northwest, contrasts with the flatter central highland plateau, and the shallow submarine shelf surrounding the island glows almost white against the deeper North Atlantic, making Iceland look exactly like what it is: a hotspot anomaly rising improbably from the ocean floor.

Produced from digital elevation data, combining a 2D bathymetric poster with hand-assembled relief on a rigid 3mm board.
