O'ahu

O'ahu is built from two eroded shield volcanoes, the Wai'anae Range to the northwest, older and more worn, and the Ko'olau Range running the length of the eastern side, its windward face cut into near-vertical fluted ridges by millions of years of rainfall and erosion. Between them, the central plateau where most of the island's population lives sits almost invisibly flat by comparison. It's a compact island that somehow contains an enormous range of terrain within it.

At 1:230,000 the Ko'olau ridgeline is the standout feature — one of the most dramatic erosion profiles in the collection, the kind of detail that draws the eye even from across the room. The reef shelf surrounds the island in a shallow halo before the Pacific drops away steeply on all sides.
