Stockholms skärgård is one of the largest archipelagos in the world, roughly 30,000 islands, islets, and skerries stretching from Kapellskär in the north to Nynäshamn in the south, carved out of bedrock by glaciers and shaped further by post-glacial rebound that is still, slowly, lifting the land today. The landscape shifts as you move outward: densely wooded islands close to the mainland giving way to the bare, wind-polished rock of the ytterskärgård where the Baltic opens up.

At 1:160,000 this is the most detailed piece in the collection, and the most demanding to assemble. The archipelago is built up in precisely aligned groups, several hundred islands in total, the smallest just a couple of millimetres across, mounted onto the bathymetric poster and finished by hand. The mainland is rendered in black, throwing the islands into sharp relief against the depth gradient of the Baltic.

Produced from digital elevation data, combining a 2D bathymetric poster with hand-assembled relief on a rigid 2mm art board.

For Stockholmers, for anyone with a sommarstuga somewhere out in the skärgård, or for anyone who wants a piece of Sweden on the wall that actually rewards a closer look.
