Svalbard

Halfway between Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is one of the most remote and least altered places on Earth, an archipelago where glaciers still cover roughly 60% of the land, polar bears outnumber people, and the landscape has had very little time to be anything other than itself. Spitsbergen, the main island, is deeply cut by fjords on its western side and rises into sharp glaciated peaks; Nordaustlandet to the east is almost entirely buried under the Austfonna ice cap, one of the largest ice masses in the world outside Greenland and Antarctica.

That contrast between the two islands is the defining visual of the piece, jagged and complex to the west, smoothed and rounded to the east, the difference between exposed mountain terrain and ice-buried plateau.
